Healing with Horses: How Equine-Assisted Therapy Helps Trauma Survivors (2026)

In the tranquil setting of Georgian Bay, a unique form of therapy is taking place, one that harnesses the healing power of horses. Nestled in the mountains, a couple of gentle giants, Lace and Sereno, are part of an equine-assisted therapy program, offering a different approach to trauma counselling.

The concept of animal therapy is not new, but the specific focus on horses and their impact on trauma recovery is gaining global recognition. Registered psychotherapist Julia Lippert, from Blue Shores Counselling, has witnessed firsthand the benefits of this therapy, noting the scientific recognition it has gained in recent years.

"The healing power of horses and animals has always been felt," Lippert says, acknowledging that while some may fear these majestic creatures due to their size, they can still provide a path to healing.

What makes this therapy unique is its organic nature. The horses are not trained to perform specific tasks during sessions; instead, they are carefully selected based on their temperament and ability to self-regulate. Lippert explains that any training is focused on improving communication between horse and human, a skill she demonstrates with ease.

"Trauma often occurs in confined spaces, so being out in nature, with its spaciousness and openness, creates a safer, more healing environment," Lippert adds. The natural surroundings, from the bird chirps to the gentle breeze, enhance the therapy experience, providing a sense of calm and support.

For patients, the presence of a horse like Lace, resting her head on their shoulder while they process intense emotions, can be a profound and moving experience. Lippert believes this physical connection changes how individuals relate to their trauma, adding a deeper layer of richness to the therapeutic process.

"It's powerful to have this physical experience that alters how one relates to their trauma," she says.

Lippert, along with her colleagues Andrea Foster and Christina Malley, brings a wealth of trauma training and diverse backgrounds to Blue Shores Counselling. With Foster's paramedic experience and Malley's military background, they offer a unique perspective to this innovative therapy program.

The equine-assisted therapy program runs from June to October, weather permitting, and is suitable for individuals aged 12 and above. Lippert highlights research from the HeartMath Institute, which shows how heart rate variability increases in the presence of horses, indicating improved stress management and adaptability.

To further explore this mystery and science of healing with horses, a documentary titled "Rescued Hearts" will be screened on June 26th at the Simcoe Street Theatre in Collingwood. The evening will include live music, refreshments, and a discussion with the registered psychotherapists from Blue Shores Counselling. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased via the provided link.

"Seeing it on screen makes it easier to understand," Lippert says, inviting the public to experience this unique form of therapy and its profound impact.
